What Kit Do You Need To Ride A Mountain Bike? | Basic MTB Gear

The second most important thing in mountain biking (after the bike, of course) is the kit you wear. Starting with a helmet, which you shouldn’t be riding without, Neil talks you through all the kit you might need to get out in the woods on your MTB!

  3. Ben Matte on March 16, 2021 at 12:06 am

you should try and use a post from a office chair you know the ones that like go up and down that would be hilarious

  4. Steve Levy on March 16, 2021 at 12:07 am

Gortex restores its water shedding ability by putting it in the dryer for 15 min on medium heat. Try it.

  5. Paul Sack on March 16, 2021 at 12:09 am

The GMBN shorts look pretty good! I’ll probably gonna get some for next spring. Still waiting on some short bibs though!

  6. Curtis F.R on March 16, 2021 at 12:10 am

I need me some ‘proper’ mtb specific kit 👍😎

  7. Krzysztof Zagorski on March 16, 2021 at 12:10 am

Like that gore tex jacket. More info / link please? Cheers!

  8. JustPlainAlex on March 16, 2021 at 12:13 am

You should definitely wash Goretex, use something like Nikwax Tech wash then the Tx direct wash-in after. I don’t work for any of these companies, just years of experience with the kit!

  9. Bill Johnson on March 16, 2021 at 12:15 am

I have both a trail and enduro bike and got a MET parachute helmet, best of both worlds.

  10. The New Piper on March 16, 2021 at 12:17 am

GORE-TEX actually advise to wash their fabrics on a warm wash (not hot) with a non-bio liquid detergent in order to re-activate the waterproofing element that they teat the fabric with.

  11. DDs Gardening on March 16, 2021 at 12:18 am

Thanks yet again Neil for the information always most informative cheers mate

  12. Murky Substance on March 16, 2021 at 12:20 am

Well done for admitting straightaway that all you really NEED is a helmet and everything else is personal preference.
For me I often feel a large insect, stone chip or tree branch smash into my glasses lenses and thank God I put them on. Gloves, water, multi-tool, quick links, phone, wallet, co2, spare tube, cable ties, weather-appropriate clothing and nothing else.

  13. Global Mountain Bike Network on March 16, 2021 at 12:20 am

What mountain bike kit do you wear?

  15. More Bike Fun OUTDOORS on March 16, 2021 at 12:21 am

I’m full face only on most trails. My wife had an accident at a local bike park and even with a MIPS helmet she still ended up with a concussion. Love that you started with the most important item. Ride safely!

  16. RNG1233 on March 16, 2021 at 12:21 am

    I only have a helmet

  17. HelplmAlive on March 16, 2021 at 12:23 am

You actually want to wash gore-tex with a specific detergent. Not washing it, dirt and oils will plug up the pores and make it less breathable.

  18. J Stoner on March 16, 2021 at 12:23 am

MTB Glasses – sat on / broken way too many for that nonsense.
If you are in the U.K. Screwfix safety glasses sell from around £2.99!

  19. jeremy tinker on March 16, 2021 at 12:25 am

That nonchalant "cool" when the car alarm went off cracked me up

  20. Kyzerkane Saguban on March 16, 2021 at 12:26 am

I like the jersey of GMBN🔥

  21. VictorTea on March 16, 2021 at 12:27 am

It’s weird how men in the UK are so dainty, but you guys are ok.

  22. Cristóbal Muñoz on March 16, 2021 at 12:29 am

  23. Rob Jeynes on March 16, 2021 at 12:30 am

Just ride your bike don’t need all that stuff, helmet is a good idea

  24. jason felstead on March 16, 2021 at 12:30 am

I think for helmet buy what you can afford to lose remember there not a one off purchase one hit and they are through away

  25. Federico Marmolejo on March 16, 2021 at 12:31 am

merino wool on socks and jerseys are worth he money

  26. Mark Twomey on March 16, 2021 at 12:35 am

Really depends on type of riding you’ll be doing and if you want to push your limits. Realistically best to wear whatever will protect you in the types of falls you may have. Nothing worse than having an injury which some protection/gear may have prevented. We all want to ride as much as we can!!

  27. Rob King on March 16, 2021 at 12:35 am

On the subject of protection, where are all the shin guards? It seems you can cover any part except the bit that gets slammed by a slipped pedal.

  28. Trail Rips on March 16, 2021 at 12:37 am

When you see people with an expensive bike, but a cheap helmet, it’s like they are riding around advertising their low IQ

  29. Ben C. on March 16, 2021 at 12:38 am

Have you thought about contacting Goretex about how to care for their products? . They recommend placing the jacket in the dryer on medium heat for 20 min after washing to reactivate the goretex fibers.

  30. Alex C on March 16, 2021 at 12:38 am

whenes poc and gmbn gonna make a colab kit line

  32. Joshua Landers on March 16, 2021 at 12:39 am

you need a helmet what else do I need nothing

  33. NoRecoil2012 on March 16, 2021 at 12:40 am

Essentials: Giro helmet, Giro DND gloves, 5-10 Freerider Pro’s, random shammy, no-name fanny pack, Podium water bottle, prescription impact-resistant aviators
Everything else: outdoor synthetic shorts and T-shirts/jerseys
I need to get myself knee pads but can’t decide which

  34. Pingpong Nava on March 16, 2021 at 12:45 am

Hi sir, i am your biggest fan from the Philippines. I hope that your gonna notice me. I wish that I have also a mtb or parts of mtb. I wish that i you will get a lot of subscribers, keepsafe and Godbless you all.

  35. Gary Postell on March 16, 2021 at 12:45 am

So why not put it in the washer with no detergent?

  36. Ryan Alexander Bloom on March 16, 2021 at 12:47 am

Helmet, gloves, shoes, chamois = The basics. After that jersey, sunglasses, knee/shin pads. After that it’s getting excessive unless you’re riding DH.

  37. PeA n HaM sOoP on March 16, 2021 at 12:50 am

According to this guy you don’t need a bike for mountain biking

  38. Shaun Clarke on March 16, 2021 at 12:50 am

In terms of riding glasses I use clear safety glasses (DeWalt) because I get them from work for free! They don’t look much different from riding glasses and you know they are gonna stop almost anything from flying into your eyes 👍

  39. blur106 on March 16, 2021 at 12:51 am

What brand is that gore tex jacket?

  40. Aaron Green on March 16, 2021 at 12:53 am

I’ve been a good boy this year, can you give me A GMBN shirt and shorts?? Please 😀

  41. jordan clayton on March 16, 2021 at 12:53 am

  43. Gary Postell on March 16, 2021 at 12:57 am

Definitely helmet, shoes, pedals ,cycling shorts or pants gloves 💯🇺🇸

  44. Heyreddin 2.0 S on March 16, 2021 at 12:58 am

A helmet, shoes a bike some gloves, and some water. Oh yeah and common sense.

  45. amos quito on March 16, 2021 at 12:58 am

Riding glasses are the biggest rip off in cycling. Any quality eye protection glasses will be perfect at about 10% of the price. Unbelievable how the marketing boys have everyone convinced otherwise!

I am a Vietnamese student and I love terrain bicycles very much, but my condition does not allow me to

  47. Splats on March 16, 2021 at 1:01 am

Got those paddles on my R Estate as well, they are great

  48. _MTBeast_ 2.0 on March 16, 2021 at 1:02 am

why is there a very high specked YT Capra in the background?

  49. Ivo Roilev on March 16, 2021 at 1:03 am

GMBN (and GCN and other sister channels) should stop promoting dark clothing! Even in the wild it is better to be visible to the other people on the trail. And occasionally even MTBikers get out on the road. Safety first, and visibility can save your life!

  50. charlie9ine on March 16, 2021 at 1:03 am

I’ve been riding full face on every ride now. With the ventilation and comfort I just can’t see the downside. Any thoughts?
