Thank you for the concern, but no worries on that– there was a 12 and under category and I think about every kid that entered got something. I just didn’t put any of the 12 and under in the film because I thought their parents might not approve without their permission. A LOT of prizes were given out! A lot of happy kids. 🙂

This was my first time to La Conner. Very cool place! The derby was Saturday, February 23. We were there from about 10-2. Not sure if it held the same weekend ever year, but it seems to always be in February.

Just found your fish channel, great stuff! I love the fish facts and the camaraderie with your mates.

Rumor has it that Pat Doyle is in fact the elusive and secretive "Shingo". Correct me if I’m wrong.

  13. akim84 on July 23, 2021 at 9:24 pm

I feel like you guys took all the prizes from little kids…

  14. Vickie Griffith on July 23, 2021 at 9:24 pm

You are in big trouble Blake. la Conner is our favorite short ride destination about 45 min from our house. You should let your family know what’s up! When is this derby.?

  15. Washington Fish Quest on July 23, 2021 at 9:27 pm

Thanks again Jason! This was actually my first time to visit La Conner– but it definitely won’t be my last! Really cool town.

In the mid 70’s you would get at least a couple of smelt on each cast (we casted and didnt jig)    it was colder than heck but brought hot chocolate. Great family memories.  They taste so good too!

  20. surethingsfly on July 23, 2021 at 9:45 pm

Great day out with friends WFQ! Pretty cool video! Smelt is a great Pike bait over here. Crazy but I had to change my subscription settings. As I wasn’t receiving email alerts on uploads. I checked you’re channel to see whats happening. Anyway I wish you well! ATB my friend.

  21. Its_Just_ Bp on July 23, 2021 at 9:46 pm

In California, you can catch smelt the size of a 12 inch ruler.

    🙂

  23. Washington Fish Quest on July 23, 2021 at 9:48 pm

I can see how you would feel that way– your only son catching the biggest fish in the derby and all!

  24. Cindy Nelson on July 23, 2021 at 9:48 pm

I missed this one too?? is that Nessers voice? You are Such a Winner !

  25. tinkmarshino on July 23, 2021 at 9:51 pm

WOW! you need to get a better opening then a scream in an echoey room.. That just about gave me a heart attack and made me want to just turn this off.. But I stopped th vid.. turned the sound WAY down and light it up again.. I have never seen anyone ever actually fish for smelt.. and I have been fishing since the early 60’s Very interesting.. But PLEASE fix your intro.. and turn the volume down to less than 75 decibels!!

  26. slowdatto on July 23, 2021 at 9:51 pm

Smelt fishing is ok. But catching a plastic bag and being able to enter it in a derby!?! WIN !

Seriously though, I enjoy WFQ. Keep’em coming !

  27. sniperff0yahoo on July 23, 2021 at 9:51 pm

Fun day fishing and won some prizes you cant beat that. 🙂

  28. Vickie Griffith on July 23, 2021 at 9:51 pm

Next time you come this far north you should call first and see if anyone has time to go too and or we can feed you or give you a place to sleep. Or just meet for dinner or lunch .

  29. Marc Webb on July 23, 2021 at 9:52 pm

Hey, im heading up to LaConner with my family to go to the next derby. I was wondering, what was the most common bait/rig or most productive setup at the derby?

  30. garrett sitter on July 23, 2021 at 9:52 pm

are you heading up the next surf smelt derby??

  31. Washington Fish Quest on July 23, 2021 at 9:54 pm

    Hey! Thank you so much!

  32. FishKepr on July 23, 2021 at 9:56 pm

Alas the La Conner Smelt Derby is no more and 2019 will be the last year. With the closure of the seafood processing plant, the discharge from which attracted the smelt in the first place, the fish moved elsewhere.
